Area Historic Buildings

Turbulent times in Korea left much of the infastructure in ruins. Today there are still a few treasures in the Anjeong-ri area that have survived. These are simple structures, and yet there is a dignified beauty in their simplicity.

The area around Anjeong-ri was a cultural and governmental hub for hundreds of years. Scholars, government officials, advanced schools and religious centers created a lively and flourishing area. Paengseong-eup, which includes Anjeong-ri, continued to be the most important city in the area until the construction in 1910 of a railroad that went through the small city of Pyeontaek. The railroad allowed for the rapid growth of Pyeontaek, which then became the new hub of commerce for the area.

What is most astounding is that with multiple invasions resulting in so much fighting on Korean soil, a few cultural treasures remained intact to this day. These are simple structures, but steeped in the history of hundreds of years in the past.

 

 

Throughout history Korea continually found itself invaded by countries who wanted to control the area. Anjeong-ri saw fighting and conflict for over a thousand years, with significant invasions from the Mongols and Japan. Today it is all in the past as the country has become a strong presence in the global arena, but the fighting took it's toll on many historic buildings.
